Sudden, painful inability to urinate despite a full bladder is a urological emergency. Decompression of the bladder through placement of a Foley catheter or a supra pubic catheter is the urologist’s first emergency option.
Immediately afterwards, the urologist must address the causes that led to the acute urinary retention.
The main endoscopic methods used by Urologist Dr. Angelos Economides, depending on the cause of the retention, include:
- Endoscopic treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, using all modern techniques, applied on an individualised basis for each patient
- Endoscopic treatment of urethral stricture, if the retention is due to scarring of the urethral lumen
- Endoscopic treatment of stone disease: if a stone from the bladder or the lower part of the ureter has become lodged at the bladder outlet or in the lumen, causing obstruction
The choice of the appropriate endoscopic technique is made exclusively by the urologist, based on his expertise in endoscopic techniques and his experience, taking into account the patient’s age, general health, prostate size and the severity of the condition.
