The use of ultrasound (intraoperative/guided ultrasound) in Urology is a valuable tool for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, without radiation and with highly accurate results.
Such ultrasound-guided examinations/treatments include:
- Transrectal Ultrasound-guided Prostate Biopsy (TRUS-guided Prostate Biopsy), combined with ultrasound-guided local anaesthesia (Periprostatic Nerve Block): usually performed alongside the biopsy to minimise pain
- Intraprostatic Injections of medicinal substances or local treatments
- Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
- Percutaneous Nephrostomy Placement, for the diagnosis and drainage of obstructive hydronephrosis
- Microsurgical Varicocelectomy, with intraoperative Doppler ultrasound monitoring to identify and preserve the testicular arteries and ligate the perforating veins
- Intraoperative Renal Ultrasound in partial nephrectomies (removal of only the tumour), for precise localisation of the tumour margins in relation to healthy parenchyma and blood vessels
- Percutaneous puncture of renal cysts for their aspiration
- Ultrasound-guided drainage of perinephric abscesses or lymphoceles
